Day 1
Depart Auckland at 7.00 am. At Waitomo you travel in a small group through a dramatic landscape. Collect your helmet and slip underground for a close-up look at the stages of glowworm life. Board a raft and navigate the caverns solely by glowworm light. In the late afternoon you travel onwards to Rotorua.
Day 2
The Tarawera Legacy package begins with an audio-visual display of the eruption of Mt Tarawera in 1886 at the Rotorua Museum. Visit the excavations at the Buried Village and then tour Whakarewarewa village where the descendants of the survivors still live. A presentation of traditional Maori song and dance is included.
Day 3
Travel on to Lake Taupo. The Lonely Planet Guide described Orakei Korako (the Hidden Valley) as “possibly the best thermal area left in New Zealand”. See boiling springs, bubbling mud pools, active geysers, silica terraces and extensive bush walks.
 Day 4
Your tour includes the thundering Huka Falls, Aratiatia Rapids, geothermal bore field and the aptly named Craters of the Moon reserve. Continue to Napier, Art Deco city.
Day 5
In 1931 Napier was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake and the face of the city was changed for ever. Take a guided walk to learn about the history of Napier before and after the quake, individual stories, and the “modern” architectural style in which the city was rebuilt. Your tour concludes in Wellington at 6.50 pm.
Suggestion: Extend this tour in Wellington and then travel on to Auckland or Christchurch.
