Day 1
Travel from Christchurch to Kaikoura aboard the Tranz Coastal train. We have allowed free time in Kaikoura for optional activities such as whalewatching by sea or by air, dolphin swimming or bird watching (not included). However because these activities tend to book up quickly, we do recommend that you ask us to book your choice of activity for you.

Day 2
Continue by train up the rugged Kaikoura coast to Blenheim in the heart of Marlborough wine country. This afternoon a guided tour will allow you to visit several wineries and taste the local fare.

Day 3
Take the morning coach to Nelson. Visit the world-renowned Höglund glassblowing studio and gallery, with a large display of functional and artistic glassware. Watch skilled glass blowers creating stunning hand-blown art glass. Next live the fantasy at the ‘World of Wearable Art and Classic Cars Museum' - unmissable!

Day 4
A full-day excursion into the gorgeous Abel Tasman National Park. Cruise the length of the coastline from Kaiteriteri to Totaranui, or disembark in one of the many bays to walk part of the track and rejoin your launch further on.

Day 5
Travelling from Nelson to Punakaiki, you connect with a guided tour to the sculpted stacks, limestone gorges and blowholes at the Pancake Rocks. A scenic bush walk leads through rainforest to a pebble beach. Overnight in Greymouth.

Day 6
A local guide will show you the hidden highlights of the West Coast, including the greenstone (jade) carvers and glassblowers of Hokitika, views of the glaciers, a walk to a glacier terminal face and a stroll along the forest edge of beautiful Lake Matheson. Return to Greymouth for the night.

Day 7
This morning visit Shantytown, where history comes alive in a recreation of an early gold-mining township. Ride the old steam train, explore the Chinese dwellings and climb to the lookout. And there's still gold in them ‘thar' hills! Pan for your own gold - you'll be assured of winning a small 'colour'. In the afternoon, board the Tranz Alpine train, known as one of the world's most scenic rail journeys. Travel from  West Coast rainforest over rocky gorges to the broad Canterbury Plains and Christchurch, arriving at 6.05 pm.

Note: Monteith's Heritage Tour may be substituted for the Pancake Rocks tour. Includes brewery visit, old mine trail, West Coast pub, meet the locals. Minimum numbers apply.
