Thermal Explorer Highway
Stop in Otorohanga en route to see the kiwi and other native birds at the Kiwi House (as opposed to kiwifruit, which may be found in orchards!). Waitomo is well-known for its limestone caves which are home to galaxies of glowworms. Explore the many cave systems on foot, or go blackwater rafting. Adventurous souls should try the dramatic "Lost World" abseil.
The distinctive smell of sulphur lets you know that Rotorua lies atop some incredible cracks in the earth's crust. It is known for its dramatic thermal activity, Maori culture and adventure activities. We highly recommend a Maori hangi (feast) and concert in a village setting.
The main sights of Rotorua include Te Puia thermal reserve, the farming show at the Agrodome and the trout springs. However we can also recommend the Waimangu Round Trip, the Tarawera Legacy and a 4WD excursion up Mt Tarawera.
See the Huka Falls and stroll along the river's edge. Visit the aptly-named Craters of the Moon or Orakei Korako, the Hidden Valley. Jetboat, bungy, sky dive, go trout fishing or simply cruise on the lake.
Gateway to Mt Taranaki/Egmont. View the visitor centre and take one of many nature walks on the mountain. New Plymouth is also well-known for its excellent gardens, the rhododendron festival and the Womad festival (World of Music, Arts and Dance).
Continue to Wellington (the capital city of New Zealand) to view attractions such as Te Papa Museum, the parliament buildings, Old St Paul's Cathedral and the iconic tram to the lookout in the botanical gardens.
